10 Percent Challenge : Red Hook Resolution

Red Hook commits to Ten Percent Challenge! June 23, 2010

Sustainable Hudson Valley (SHV) is enlisting communities to participate in the Ten Percent Challenge in partnership with Central Hudson, NYSERDA, and other key technical assistance providers to engage 10% of the population in commitments to cut energy use by 10% in a year’s time or less.

SHV has developed a package of incentives and tools to assist the early adopter communities, including:

What We Do

Sustainable Hudson Valley takes on systemic, regional-scale change initiatives that build the capacity of the region’s citizens and agencies to meet their economic needs while restoring the environment and improving quality of life. Our twin goals are to build markets for green industries through local lifestyle campaigns, and to help those industries to establish themselves in the Valley. We do this by forming and supporting community based initiatives with two key resources, expertise and motivation.

Who We Are

Why SHV? Climate change is the challenge of our era. Dealing with it dynamically can be the economic and creative engine of a lifetime. National politics is a battleground, and local change alone may not move swiftly enough. In this situation, a region committed to sustainable development and collaborative strategies could become an exciting model.

The fallout from the Gulf Coast BP oil spill is a slow-moving reminder of an opportunity in disguise: to grow the market for clean energy jobs with a movement of households, businesses, and institutions that choose to use energy as the precious, risk-filled resource that it is.

How We Work

Approach   We inspire action because we believe in the strengths of human beings and know how to tap these strengths for a common purpose.  We are at the center of a “network of a thousand leaders” -- the innovative citizens, officials, educators, and entrepreneurs who benefit from the connections, resources and shared purpose they find through our projects, events, and online community.

Get Involved

Volunteering with Sustainable Hudson Valley is a great way to build and showcase your skills, meet cool people who care, and give a meaningful gift to your community.  We typically need a hand with graphic design, events, research and fundraising, plus special projects.
