Planting Power Newburgh is a year-long, joint program between Sustainable Hudson Valley and the Greater Newburgh Parks Conservancy. Funded by a grant from Rotary International, the project’s goal is to promote restoration, improvement and ongoing stewardship of Newburgh’s urban ecosystem.
Newburgh residents, especially youth, will learn about the state of Newburgh’s environment, receive training on the restoration of these urban ecosystems and carry out several designated hands-on projects to restore and enhance the City’s green infrastructure and climate resilience, while educating the community on pro-environmental behaviors. Projects will be done in all four wards and will involve such things as planting pollinator plots, rain gardens, reforestation in parks and other public spaces to advance biodiversity, creating a food forest in one of the City’s lead urban farms and caring for the City’s precious and ailing urban forest. The program will also build capacity in the City for maintaining greenscapes – especially infrastructure for watering and people power for maintenance of plantings.
