Open Community Meeting
In an effort to improve and expand public transportation, Ulster County is partnering with Via to explore a “microtransit” solution that would provide on-demand, electric shuttles in Kingston and Ellenville. Riders book their trip in a mobile app, wait several minutes for their vehicle to arrive, and are directed to a “virtual bus stop” within a short walking distance – allowing for quick, efficient shared trips.
The project is called UlsterConnect. Between now and early summer, we are reaching out for community input as to how people currently use public transit and how a microtransit service could help to meet their needs. Our commitment is to design a highly effective solution that works for everyone who relies on transit and attracts new riders. The County is on a short list of competitors for a $10 million New York Clean Transportation prize to implement the community’s preferred solution.
