Sustainable Shopping in Bronxville - An Example of Best Practices for Buying and Donating

December 2023

On November 4th, I visited the Reformed Church of Bronxville Clothing and Tag Sale. The Reformed Church of Bronxville Clothing and Tag Sale usually takes place twice a year, once in the fall and once in the spring. In addition to visiting at 9 AM, I visited in the afternoon around 1 PM, which was the last hour before closing. Last hour was enjoyable because attendees received a large bag for $10 that could be filled with anything. It was a real thrifting experience! Being one of the first and last customers allowed me to observe how much they were able to sell, and at an affordable price. Winter coats, for example, were often the most expensive item, costing around $12. For $100, I bought two pairs of shoes, three jackets, four small purses, two cardigans, a sweater, ties, and a vase. For all that was purchased, this was a reasonable price point compared to thrifting in larger cities, and of course, far cheaper than buying new.

Buying used reduces landfill waste, and reduces the need for new production of products.

The sale was also unique in that there was a designated section for name brand items, for which you had to wait in line. However, the line moved quickly and you were able to get name brand items at a reasonable price. For $10, I was able to purchase a cashmere sweater that would have cost me much more at retail. I will definitely try to get on that line sooner next time! You can also pick up decorations and dinnerware for a reasonable price at the sale, and they had plenty of household items.

It's also important to mention that lines for the sales begin at least 30 minutes before they open. Both times I went, I arrived 30 minutes before opening, and there was already a good crowd waiting in line. It is probably best to go earlier if you want to find good finds. However, I was still able to find so much in the last hour!

Many people think they have to go far to find good thrifting finds. There are, however, times when local churches sell donated clothing, and you can find a lot of good items. From September through May, the Church of Bronxville Clothing and Tag Sale welcomes donations of clothing accessories and more. Two to three times a year, these items are sold during the sale. Additionally, you can help the community by volunteering to sort and assist with the sale. As well as raising funds for people in need, the sale supports the church's Mission Programs. If your personal beliefs are different from those of the charity, it can be helpful to find other places and thrift stores where you can donate clothes.

Lots of clothing will still be in great condition — and some may be vintage!

Tag sales and similar community events also build community and often raise money for charity.

Donating items is often associated with sending them to goodwill or to online sources. Consider donating your items to a local church or researching a better place to send them. Approximately half of donated clothing is deemed suitable for retail by a charity like Goodwill. Goodwill outlet stores, which are wholesale establishments that resell items at significantly discounted prices, or salvage dealers receive the remaining 50 percent of donations that don't meet the quality standard. It is shocking to learn that over half of the clothes donated to goodwill aren't sold. My experience at the church's sale was quite different. Most of the items were sold by the last hour, and I believe what wasn't sold was donated to those in need. There is a lot less waste compared to what might go to waste at goodwill or online. This church not only promotes sustainable donations, but also allows people to purchase clothes for a lower price than what they might normally sell at retail. Additionally, the church provides opportunities for people to volunteer, which builds community.

Finally, it is important to know how to properly donate items. You should wash clothes before donating, and avoid donating clothes with stains that can't be removed. Household items should also be clean if you are considering donating them. Make sure electronics are working before donating them. Items should have all parts or close to them, so they can be repurposed by the next person who uses them. It is also important to pack breakable items carefully if you are donating them. Remember that not everything you want to get rid of may be suitable for others. Therefore, it is best to use your judgment as to what might be best to donate at the end of the day.
